Etsy Title Length and Format in 2026
Etsy titles can be 140 characters. The handbook says fewer than 15 words, the item noun once, and no subjective or price language. Here is that format.

The cap is 140 characters. The advice on top of that cap is shorter than most sellers write. How to Create a Listing says a title can be up to 140 characters, and that you should consider fewer than 15 words. State what the item is and the key details. Avoid repetition and subjective words such as “perfect”. Do not put price or shipping in the title. Include a holiday, occasion, or recipient only when it is essential to the item. Their example is a Halloween costume.
What Etsy says to keep
New Guidance for Listing Titles is the piece to read if you still write titles as keyword lists. Etsy says search now looks across the title, tags, attributes, description, first photo, and reviews. The title still affects search and whether someone clicks, but it does not have to do every job.
Their table, shortened to the decision:
- The noun (dress, mug, table) stays. Say what it is once.
- Objective descriptors (neon pink, extra large, reclaimed wood, vintage) stay. They point at the top details for the category, including color, material, and size.
- Holiday or recipient language stays only when it is the product.
- Subjective words (beautiful, perfect, wonderful) come out. Etsy says to move that kind of language to tags or attributes if you still want it somewhere.
- Price and shipping language (“on sale”, “free shipping”) comes out completely.
I follow that table. A title I would actually publish for a stoneware mug: “Speckled stoneware mug, 12 oz”. It names the object, the finish, and the size. It does not say “perfect gift for her best coffee lover”.
The URL does not follow your edits
The create-a-listing article says the listing URL is taken from the title the first time you publish. Editing the title later does not change the URL. If you change what the listing sells, Etsy says to consider a new listing so the URL matches. That is a practical reason not to publish a placeholder title.
Where the extra words go
Tags still take the phrases that did not fit, within 13 slots and 20 characters. Attributes take structured facts the category already knows about. The description takes the longer explanation, and Etsy says to include search words there too. The map is in the SEO guide and the tag guide.
If you want a pass/fail on a live title, use the checklist. NicheKite will count characters. It will not rewrite the title for you.
