Etsy search is not a secret score you can buy. The useful part is public. Etsy’s own handbook says that when someone searches, the system takes a holistic view of the listing: title, tags, attributes, description, first photo, reviews, and more. Exact keyword matches can rank higher because Etsy treats them as more relevant. Using all 13 tags, varying those tags, filling attributes, and picking a specific category are the moves Etsy names as ways to match more queries. That is the whole “algorithm” I am willing to plan around. The page is How Etsy Search Works.

Start with one query, not a tag cloud

Pick the phrase a buyer would type if they already knew the object. “Linen napkin” is a query. “Beautiful handmade perfect gift” is not. Etsy’s newer title guidance says the title should say what the item is, once, plus the few objective details that matter for that category: color, material, size, and whatever actually sets it apart. Subjective words, prices, and shipping claims do not belong in the title. Read New Guidance for Listing Titles before you paste a 140-character keyword string into Shop Manager.

The hard limit is still 140 characters. Etsy Help also says to consider fewer than 15 words, to avoid repetition, and to include a holiday or recipient only when it is essential to what the item is. A Halloween costume qualifies. A mug does not become a “Mother’s Day mug” for eleven months. Source: How to Create a Listing.

Titles, tags, and attributes do different jobs

The title is what the shopper reads in search. Tags are extra phrases, up to 13 of them, 20 characters each. Etsy says tags help when there is no matching attribute, and they are a good place for buyer language such as “gift for her”. Do not spend two tags on the same words the title already repeats. The handbook’s example is the right instinct: “custom bracelet” is a stronger tag than splitting “custom” and “bracelet”, and it leaves a slot free. See Keywords 101 and How to Use Tags.

Attributes and category are not optional decoration. Etsy says a specific category and the relevant attribute options can increase the chance of matching a query. If the category has a color or material attribute, use it. Do not bury that fact only in a tag.

What I do not pretend to know

Etsy does not publish a weight for “reviews beat tags” or a number of searches per day for “linen napkin”. Shops can see some of their own query data inside Shop Manager. A third-party app reading public listings cannot. NicheKite shows the active listing count and the listings the API returned, and it labels keyword difficulty as an Estimate. If a cell would require search volume, it stays a dash. The longer version is Does Etsy show search volume?.

Photos and reviews are part of the holistic view Etsy described. I will not invent a conversion rate from a favorite count. Favorites divided by views is a save rate, and only when views came back from the API.

A working order

  1. Write the buyer query and two close variants.
  2. Draft a title under 15 words that names the object and the top objective details. Stay under 140 characters.
  3. Fill 13 tags with phrases the title did not already use. Stay inside 20 characters, and do not start a tag with ' or -.
  4. Set category and attributes.
  5. Put the longer story, materials, and sizing in the description. Etsy says to include keywords buyers would use there too.
  6. Price after fees. The listing fee is $0.20, the transaction fee is 6.5% of the displayed price plus shipping and gift wrap, and US payment processing on Etsy Payments is 3% + $0.25. Those figures are from Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy and Etsy Payments Policy. The walkthrough is Etsy fees explained.

New listings can take up to 48 hours to show in search and categories, according to the same create-a-listing article. Do not rewrite the title five times in an afternoon and call the silence an algorithm penalty.
