How to Research Keywords for Etsy Digital Products
Pick keywords for an Etsy digital download around the file a buyer wants. Etsy caps digital listings at five files and does not offer variations on them.

Digital keyword research fails when the phrase describes a mood and the listing sells a file. Buyers type the file. “Boho neutral” is a style. “Wedding seating chart template” is a download.
How to Create a Listing is the constraint I start from, because it changes which keywords are even listable:
- A digital listing can include up to five files. Etsy says that if you need more, add a PDF that links the buyer to the rest.
- Variations are unavailable for digital listings. You cannot hang “A4” and “US Letter” on one listing as variations. You put both in the five files, or you publish another listing.
Those two rules decide the keyword. If the format is the thing people search, and it does not fit in the five files, it needs its own phrase and its own listing.
Phrases that fit a tag
Tags are still 13 slots, 20 characters each. Spaces count. These are the shapes I keep:
| Phrase | Characters | Note |
|---|---|---|
| budget spreadsheet | 18 | Names the file |
| wedding menu card | 18 | Names the file and the use |
| png clipart | 11 | Names the format |
| printable planner | 18 | “Printable” is the delivery, “planner” is the file |
| aesthetic digital download | 27 | Too long, and it does not name a file |
Keywords 101 says to prefer multi-word phrases and to use all 13 tags. For a digital listing I spend the slots on format, document type, and one occasion only when the file is for that occasion. I do not spend three tags on “instant”, “download”, and “digital” separately if the title already says it is a digital download. Etsy asks for variety, not 13 ways to say the same delivery method.
Titles stay short
The title cap is 140 characters, and Etsy says to consider fewer than 15 words. State what the item is. Do not put price or shipping in the title. For a template I would publish: “Wedding menu card template, editable”. It names the document, says it is a template, and names the job (editable). It does not say “perfect boho instant download”. The reasoning is in the title guide, including the part people miss: the listing URL is taken from the first title you publish and does not change when you edit.
Demand, without a made-up volume
Search the phrase and count the listings. Read whether page 1 is the same file type. That is the competition check in how to find a low-competition niche. Etsy does not give apps shopper search volume, so I do not fill one in. If you have Marketplace Insights for your own shop, paste that number and label it as yours. The walkthrough is Etsy keyword research.
When the phrase survives that check, run the listing through the optimization checklist before you publish. Etsy’s listing fee is $0.20 USD, charged when a listing is published or renewed. The worked numbers are in Etsy fees explained.
